I’m growing a bigger audience on Twitter, which is fun for me because I am just being a friendly loudmouth nerd. From there I can promote content that is hosted anywhere. It’s possible to monetise Substack, but I don’t intend to. I have sold ebooks, webinars and online courses, in addition to the less transactional / ‘gift economy’ style of Patreon.
Here’s my current ‘stack’:
- longform pieces on Medium (no paywall)
- stream of consciousness on Twitter
- occasional newsletter on Substack (advertised in Twitter bio)
- ebook for sale on Twitter pinned post
- primarily monetise through small-cohort courses (with this format)
- stop using Facebook, just point to Substack
My Patreon supporters have been good to me, but I’ve never felt satisfied that I really understand the terms of the arrangement. I feel more comfortable selling a defined product.
