My writing workflow:
Thanks Steven Johnson, I really appreciate seeing this insight into your craft. I have just settled on an article- and book-writing workflow that I’m really satisfied with.
I write in Ulysses. It does the same scrolling-doc-made-of-cards-in-nested-folders trick as Scrivener. The most compelling feature for me is that I can edit in Markdown format, and then export to rtf, html, epub, pdf, docx, and Medium. It’s a minimalist interface with good customisation options hidden out of sight.
Here’s some screenshots:
- the 3 column layout for when I’m working on structure
- distraction-free mode for when I’m in flow (nothing on the screen but words)
And the output:
- example blogpost published to Medium
- pdf + html exports on my website
All I want now is collaborative editing mode and I would be 100% satisfied with my workflow.
